Integrity Commissioner finds Jagmeet Singh wrongly used constituency resources for partisan purposes

Bramalea—Gore—Malton MPP Jagmeet Singh violated the Member’s Integrity Act by using his constituency website to advertise a partisan New Democratic rally.

Following an extensive investigation, the Legislature’s independent Integrity Commissioner has ruled that Singh inappropriately used his constituency office and staff to promote a partisan rally held by Thomas Mulcair and the Federal NDP and to endorse “Tom and the NDP team.” Additionally the Ontario NDP Deputy Leader Singh was found in contravention of Ontario parliamentary convention by inappropriately soliciting donations on his constituency website.

The Integrity Commissioner ruled that:

"this error occurred because constituency office staff did not properly understand the requirement to keep partisan matters out of the constituency office...Mr. Singh failed to ensure his staff received the necessary training in order to understand the appropriate use of constituency office resources"

 The Integrity Commissioner further ruled:

"Mr. Singh breached Ontario parliamentary convention by seeking donations on his website...Mr. Singh should have known his website blurred the lines between constituency and partisan matters."

“The report speaks for itself.  Mr. Singh broke the rules.  You can’t use your constituency office for your political party and it is grossly inappropriate to solicit donations on a MPP website,” Said Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker.  “It’s wrong and Jagmeet Singh needs to reimburse taxpayers and refund those illegitimate donations.”

 “As a lawyer, and an experienced parliamentarian, it is startling that Jagmeet Singh so blatantly contravened parliamentary convention" said MPP Baker. ““NDP leader Andrea Horwath needs to make it clear to her deputy that this is unacceptable behavior.”
